Statement Qian Yin 1 Introduction

My research interests lie in the areas of dynamical systems and geometry of negatively curved spaces. My thesis is on the dynamics of expanding Thurston maps, and the negatively curved spaces induced by these maps. A dynamical system describes the time dependence of the position of a point in its ambient space under some fixed law. This law describes the evolution of the state of the system over time. Examples of dynamical systems appear frequently in the natural sciences. A negatively curved space is a generalized notion of a hyperbolic space. We can make sense of the notion of negatively curved space in a general metric space setting, for example, using the thinness condition of geodesic triangles. A distinctive property of these spaces is that the distance between two parallel geodesics becomes arbitrarily large if we travel along the geodesics in the same direction The study of some dynamical systems and the study of negatively curved spaces are connected by the so-called “Sullivan dictionary”. It was first introduced in [S], and since then, the dictionary has led to results and methods in one subject suggesting similar ones in the other. In what follows, I describe my previous results and outline a plan for ongoing research.
